Shelters Aren't Just for Domestic Animals: Saving the Cheetah from the Illegal Pet Trade

Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) has two centers that work tirelessly with communities and other stakeholders to save the cheetah from extinction in its natural habitat. Join Dr. Laurie Marker as she discusses how, for over thirty years, she has created proven programs that not only support communities to coexist with wildlife, but also find solutions to the illegal wildlife trade (IWT). CCF began working in Somaliland a few years ago in partnership with the government, to stop the illegal trade, rescuing cheetah cubs destined for the exotic pet trade in the Middle East. With over 90 animals currently in their care, it is a daily struggle to stop the trade from continuing. The animals brought to them are in such poor condition and health they need immediate medical intervention, food, water, and unfortunately, may require care for the rest of their lives.

San Diego Humane Society's Andy Blue will also share his experience visiting the safehouses in Somaliland, and Dr. Marker will discuss how partnerships between organizations like SDHS and CCF help both domestic animals and their wild cousins.
